CHAPTER FIVE
Luther had a pretty easy time of it so far. He checked in on Austin a few times, but the guy continued to sleep. One of the nurses brought him a cup of coffee and he continued to read his newspaper. It wasn’t until about an hour into his assignment that there came a loud crash from inside the room. Luther jumped and rushed into the room to see Austin on the floor struggling to get into a wheelchair.
“Hey there what are you trying to do?” Luther went over to him and attempted to help him, but Austin would have none of it.
“I can do this myself.” He snapped and pulled himself very awkwardly into his chair. Luther stood back and watched the action play out. Austin was exhausted by the time he was finally situated in his chair. He reached over and hit the button to summon the nurse and then sat back and eyed Luther suspiciously.
“Liam had to go to a meeting, he asked me to stay close until he returned. He worries about you. Liam and I are friends, my name is Luther Drake.” Luther leaned his shoulder against the wall and waited.
Austin was about to speak when the nurse came into the room. “I’d like to discharge now.” Austin declared. The nurse looked shocked and looked at Luther for an explanation. Luther shrugged his shoulders.
“You need to continue with the therapies that have been set up for you.” The nurse urged and tried to convince Austin to get back into bed.
“I’ve had beds up to here.” He motioned to his chin. “I’m out of here, now bring me the discharge paperwork or I will just leave.” Austin started to roll towards the door.
“Okay, I’ll be right back.” The nurse hurried out of the room.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Luther asked, but did not try to stop him.
“I can’t stay in this place one more minute. If that nurse doesn’t get back her immediately I’m going.” Austin was practically jumping in his seat as if he had somewhere important to be. Finally it must have been too long, because Austin started leaving. He was down the hall and nearly at the elevator when the nurse caught up with him.
Austin quickly signed out and was on his way. Luther was right behind him. “So where are you headed?” Luther got on the elevator with the angry young man.
Austin shot him an irritated glance. “I don’t know, anywhere but here.”
“Okay.” Luther hit the button for the ground floor. Luther followed Austin as he wheeled himself out of the hospital and down the sidewalk towards town. He was pissed, that much was obvious. Luther tried to help him by pushing his chair, but Austin told him he could do it himself so Luther once again backed off, but not too far.
Luther pulled his phone out and sent Liam a quick text alerting him to the situation. His phone rang soon afterward. “Where are you?” Liam asked concern lacing his tone.
